Honestly the best way to Tie dye is to buy a kit in a craft store, follow the instructions (completely) and experiment. I also watched the Martha Stewart special on it.
tip: the lesser and looser you place the rubber bands the more color.

fold in half, scrunch a half heart design

pull from the center, rubber band sections

fan

fold like a fan (length or width), rubber bands depend on how many sections

one more

swirl
swirl from center of shirt, 3-4 rubber bands just to hold in place, die one side one color then die the other side random colors
